Welcome to Cedar Tree Montessori!

Cedar Tree Montessori Elementary School is a caring, dedicated community of students, parents and teachers located in Bellingham, Washington. We treasure each child’s special personality and unique set of abilities. The Montessori classroom is designed to provide a rich and stimulating environment in which each child can develop academically at his or her own pace. Social skills are taught and modeled. Children role-play strategies and are guided on the playground and in the classroom to use these techniques. Cooperation and conflict resolution create a peaceful, productive, happy classroom atmosphere.

What is Montessori?

At the core of Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy is deep respect for each child's unique path of academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development. To support the child's natural love of learning, she developed appealing, multi-sensory, hands-on activities which can be used independently or with initial instruction from the teacher.

In a Montessori elementary classroom, students work on different tasks according to their individualized work plans. Students are taught individually or in small groups. Montessori children enjoy freedom of movement around the classroom, planning and evaluating their work and managing their time. Opportunities for cooperative learning and creative problem-solving occur naturally. The older students develop leadership skills and reinforce their past learning while assisting younger students. The younger children, in turn, learn by observing and following the older children. In this way, the children form a respectful, caring community.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum at Cedar Tree Montessori includes traditional subjects such as reading, language, writing, and spelling as well as hands-on math, science and social studies. Art, music, computers, physical education and Spanish provide enrichment. Other important parts of the curriculum are social skills (including conflict resolution strategies), cultural studies and environmental awareness. We take frequent field trips and invite guest speakers on topics currently under study. The Montessori curriculum inspires students to become curious, compassionate, lifelong learners.
