Parent Involvement

We love our parent volunteers! Parent participation is encouraged at Cedar Tree. You may wish to spend time with just your child or you may wish to help out at school. The following are several opportunities for parent (or grandparent!) involvement. Please let one of the teachers know if you are interested in a particular job.

Field Trip Volunteers

We take field trips related to topics under study many times a year. For these trips, we need drivers. When we take the bus, we still need additional parents to help supervise. We welcome parents to help out on these days. Please note that to drive on a field trip, you need a current driver’s license, proof of car insurance and a seat belt for each child.

Reading Volunteers – Lower Elementary

We particularly need parents to listen to children read. If you have a spare hour once a week in the morning and would like to volunteer, please let us know. We need readers from 9:30 to 10:30 am each day. If you come at 9:00 with your child, we will invite you to help with a classroom task, such as making up notebooks, posting children's artwork or preparing materials.

Spelling Volunteer – Lower Elementary

In order to maintain an individualized spelling program, we depend on a wonderful parent to come each week on Friday morning and give spelling tests. This job involves correcting the spelling, recording each child’s unit number for the teacher and on the worklist. You may also pretest older children who are ready to skip easier units. This is a challenging and rewarding job as you can see much progress from one month to the next!

Creative Writing Typist – Lower Elementary

You can do this at home or at school. For the lower elementary students, you type their hand-written stories into Word format. Once the text is entered, it is much easier for lower elementary students to edit and revise their writing.

Art Class Volunteer – Lower Elementary

Curious about how Lynn gets those great results in art class? Come each Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. and help! Instruction is from 1:00 to 2:00 and clean up usually takes an additional twenty minutes. Finding an art volunteer will allow Kim to take Tuesday afternoons after 1:00 pm to work on administration tasks in the office. Jeanine will be the teacher in charge in the afternoons. If you can stay for the remainder of the afternoon, Jeanine would appreciate the help.

Book and Software Order Volunteer

Scholastic Books sends us lots of catalogs for books and software! As the Scholastic volunteer, you can choose the catalogs you think are most valuable. This job entails labeling forms with each child’s name once a month, receiving payments and order forms, tallying the orders and sending them off. When the books and software arrive, you put them in the children’s mailboxes. Any extra points we earn from book orders, we use to order new books for the school.

Phone Tree Volunteer

Occasionally, we need help calling all the parents to share critical information. If you would like to be in charge of the phone tree, please let us know. This job includes setting up the phone tree and receiving calls from the teachers to initiate the tree.

Upper Elementary Volunteers

Getting out of the classroom and into the community becomes more important at this age! Amy is always in need of drivers for field trips and various P.E. events.

Or maybe you are especially interested and excited about a certain topic that you would like to share with the children? No experience needed... Your enthusiasm is contagious! Gardeners? Musicians? Cooks? Writers? Carpenters? Weavers? Do you make pottery, knit, sew, practice martial arts, or play a sport? Just let Amy know.
